Entrepreneur, director and social issues commentator, Nuwanthie Samarakone is a dynamic leader whose life and work are driven by purpose and values. Born in Sri Lanka, she spent her early years between Scotland and Colombo before moving to Auckland as a teenager. A proud graduate of a decile 4 public school and the University of Auckland, where she studied Health, Nuwanthie began her career in both the public and private health sectors. There she saw how policy and practice directly shape the wellbeing of a nation—an insight that set her on an entrepreneurial path.
A decade ago, she founded ICE – Inspire, Create & Engage – to help young people find meaningful work in organisations that value intergenerational talent. Today, ICE operates in six countries and 24 markets across the Asia Pacific, London and San Francisco, partnering with global employers to build future-fit workforces.
Her business acumen extends across governance and community. Nuwanthie is an independent director of Tourism Talent, supporting professionals impacted by Covid-19, and of Kalandra Education Group, which delivers NZQA-approved training in aged care and mental health across APAC. She also serves as a director of Kokiri Construction, a consortium creating sustainable social and residential housing developments throughout Aotearoa.
Her contribution to the community is equally far-reaching. She has served as Chair of the Auckland ICT Graduate School, and as a trustee for the Well Foundation, Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust, and the Royal New Zealand Ballet. In 2020, she stood as a liberal centre-right candidate in the General Election, reflecting her deep understanding of how social, political and business systems intersect.
Recognised among New Zealand’s emerging leaders, her accolades include Ethnic Governance Leader of the Year (2022), a finalist for Emerging Governance Leader (2021), and inclusion in the University of Auckland’s 40 Under 40 list.
Regularly appearing on TV3’s The AM Show, RNZ National, and TodayFM, Nuwanthie brings an informed and compassionate voice to conversations on politics, governance and social change. Grounded yet visionary, she continues to champion values-based leadership and the belief that business, when done right, can create good.
