Australia's Former Ambassador to the United States of America & Former Treasurer of Australia

After having served in Australian politics for nearly twenty years, at some of the highest levels in the Government, Joe Hockey arrived as the Australian Ambassador to the United States in 2016 and found Washington DC to be “House of Cards”, ”West Wing” and “Downton Abbey” combined.

Amb. Hockey negotiated at the highest levels with both the Obama and Trump Administrations on issues ranging from refugee deals to international security and defense.

His greatest success was to negotiate an exemption for Australia from all tariffs and quotas imposed by the Trump Administration. He also established the Australian Caucus in the US Congress which is one of the largest caucuses in the Capitol. All this in the wake of a famous first phone call that went bad between President Trump and Prime Minister Turnbull.

Known as a quick wit and bad golfer, Ambassador Hockey has hit the course with both Presidents Clinton and Trump. He continues to work closely with Republicans and Democrats.

Prior to his work as Ambassador, Mr Hockey served as Treasurer of Australia. At the time he was responsible for the Australian economy which is now in its 30th consecutive year without a recession.

As Treasurer Mr Hockey Chaired the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors, and he was deeply engaged with the World Bank, IMF, Asian Development Bank and Asian Infrastructure and Investment Bank.

He is widely regarded as a global authority on Infrastructure financing and was the creator of “Asset Recycling".

Ambassador Hockey lives in Washington DC and is President and Co-Founder of Bondi Partners LLC. He is a visiting Fellow at American University and he is active on both twitter @joehockey and Instagram joehockeyusa.
